How to Calculate Your Water Bill
Domestic water charges in Indian cities are billed in Kilolitres (KL), where 1 KL equals 1,000 litres. Follow these steps to calculate your water estimate:
Select Your Municipal Water Board
Choose your provider (e.g. Delhi Jal Board, Bangalore BWSSB, Mumbai BMC). Slabs and charges are highly local and set by city corporations.
Enter Consumption in KL
Input your consumption volume in Kilolitres (KL). Check your recent meter reading or estimate using average daily household usage.
Specify Connection & Meter Info
Select connection category (Residential/Commercial) and meter size (typically 15 mm or 1/2" for domestic connections). This sets meter service charges.
Sewerage Charges
In most metropolitan water supply boards (like DJB or BWSSB), a separate Sewerage Charge / Tax is applied on your bill. This is typically calculated as a fixed percentage (usually 50% to 60%) of your total water consumption charges.
Our water bill calculators automatically apply the correct sewerage fee percentage specified by your local municipal body.
4 Essential Water Conservation & Saving Tips
Simple and effective strategies you can implement at home to save water and reduce your monthly utility charges.
Install Aerators on Taps
Aerators mix air into the water stream, maintaining high pressure while reducing actual flow rate by up to 50%.
Check and Repair Leaks Immediately
A single leaking faucet can waste up to 15-20 litres of water per day. Fix leaky washers, joints, and toilet flush tanks promptly.
Reuse RO Wastewater
Reverse Osmosis (RO) water purifiers discard 3 litres of water for every 1 litre purified. Collect this reject water for floor mopping, utensils, and watering plants.
Dual-Flush Toilet Tanks
Install dual-flush buttons on toilet cisterns. Using the half-flush (3 litres) instead of full-flush (6 litres) when appropriate saves thousands of litres annually.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Commonly asked questions and answers about Water Bills bills, tariffs, and slab structures.
Water consumption is measured and billed in Kilolitres (KL). One Kilolitre equals exactly 1,000 Litres of water. Your municipal water meter records your usage, and subtracting the previous reading from the current reading gives your consumption for the billing cycle.
Sewerage charges (or sewage tax) cover the cost of collecting, piping, and treating wastewater generated by your household. In most Indian municipalities, it's calculated as a fixed percentage (typically 50% to 60%) of your total water consumption charge.
Some cities like Delhi provide free water allowances (e.g., up to 20 KL per month for residential households with working meters). However, if your consumption crosses 20 KL by even a single litre, you are billed for the entire 20+ KL volume without any free subsidy.
Yes, absolutely. The size of the inlet pipe (e.g. 15mm or 1/2", 20mm or 3/4", 25mm or 1") determines the flat monthly service/meter charge. Larger diameter connections allow higher flow capacity and therefore carry higher fixed charges.
Modern mechanical water meters show a odometer-style counter. The black digits represent Kilolitres (whole numbers) which you use for billing, while red digits or dials show sub-units (litres). Subtract your last billed reading from the current reading to calculate your usage for the cycle.
To encourage water conservation, municipalities charge higher rates as your usage increases. Under telescopic slabs, if you consume 25 KL, the first 10 KL is billed at the cheapest baseline rate, the next 10 KL at a slightly higher rate, and only the remaining 5 KL at the highest rate.
If your meter is not active or is broken, you should report it to your local water board office. Until it is replaced, the board will typically charge you a "flat average bill" based on your historical usage or standard minimum estimates.
Municipalities categorize rates by connection purpose. Residential water is billed at low subsidized rates because it is a basic human necessity. Commercial buildings, offices, and factories use water for profit-making activities and are charged higher, non-subsidized tariffs.
When applying for a new connection, water boards levy a one-time infrastructure development or connection charge. This helps fund the expansion of main pipelines, pump reservoirs, and treatment plants in your layout.
You can perform a simple bucket test: record the exact meter reading (including the decimal digits), fill a known 20-litre container 5 times (total 100 litres), and check the reading again. If the difference is significantly more or less than 0.1 KL, file a request with the board for meter calibration.
